When artists seize data

Thursday 6 October at 10.30 am (1 hour 15 minutes)

The explosion of ‘megadata’ (Big Data) – the unmeasurable amount of data collected from our environment, in public spaces and through digital objects that we carry around – entails as many new perspectives as societal inquiries. Apart from a critical view that some artists may have, more and more of them search for artistic raw material in the midst of this flux of data. How to surpass the production of profiling or generalised descriptive statistics tools (data visualisation) to create artwork? How to use it in an artistic way, for instance in order to help the public feel the pulse of a place, the rhythm of the world or even the climate? And what further new vision do artists provide with regards to data and their visualisation?
